dexedrine and risperdal interaction?

January 6th, 2009
  • I would be interested to know if there are any antagonistic interactions between dexedrine and risperdal. In the literature it is stated that chlorpromazine and haldol, which are both dopamine antagonists, counteract the effects of dexedrine. Risperdol which is an atypical antipsychotic is also a dopamine antagonist but is not listed in any of the literature as having an antagonistic effect on dexedrine. Is this the case or is there just not enough literature on the subject? I've read the literature on both dexedrine and risperdal.I've asked a few pharmasists but they don't know. Please write back. mitchy-ga

  • Effects of Drug Interactions with Dexedrine Stimulant medications such as Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine) should not be taken with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors; serious, even fatal, interactions can occur. At least 14 days should elapse between discontinuation of a MAOI and initiation of therapy with citalopram. Similarly, at least 14 days should be allowed after stopping citalopram before starting a MAOI. Acidifying agents such as guanethidine, reserpine, and fruit juices can lower absorption of Dexedrine. Alkalinizing agents such as Diamox (acetazolamide) increase absorption of amphetamines. Tricyclic antidepressants may increase their levels when taken with Dexedrine. Thorazine (chlorpromazine), lithium, and Haldol (haloperidol)can blunt the effects of Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine). Dexedrine increases the effects norepinephrine. Effects of Drug Interactions with Risperdal Risperdal (risperidone) is a relatively new drug in a line of atypical antipsychotic drugs or "neuroleptics" that are used to combat both positive and negative symptoms in schizophrenia. The occurance and intensity of side effects is reduced in Risperdal, compared to other drugs that treat psychosis, but serious and permanent side effects can occur from using Risperdal. "Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome is a sometimes fatal reaction to certain psychiatric drugs. The reaction is characterized by fever, rigid muscles, rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, sweating, shaking, seizures, and/or unconsiousness/coma. The death rate is 20 per cent. Tardive Dyskinesia is a condition that can cause permanent brain damage. Symptoms of TD include uncontrolled movements of the mouth, tongue, arms, and legs. The earliest symptom is usually a "snake-like," fine, involuntary movement of the tongue. If this is experienced, contact your physician immediately." You should also check with your physician if you are taking central nervous system depressants (like antihistamines, hay fever medicines, sedatives, narcotics, anesthetics, barbiturates, or muscle relaxants) or if you are taking vasodilators (drug that dilate blood vessels.) Interaction Between Dexedrine and Risperdal It would appear you are being treated using an "Augmentation Strategy" in which the use of drugs not typically thought of as antidepressants are combined with a standard antidepressant. Such strategies are used for patients who fail standard therapies or need to quickly speed up the response of the antidepressant. And according to the German Journal of Psychiatry's Psychopharmacological Drug Interactions Calculator ( http://www.gjpsy.uni-goettingen.de/gjpinteraction/interaction_main.php ), there is no known interaction between these two drugs. For your own interest, you should bookmark this website. It allows a person to check how prescriptions will react with other prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs. And it is fairly easy to use.
