How to get 1024x768 resolution back, on NT4?

January 6th, 2009
  • I would like to run a higer resolution on our system. Currently, we can't anything greater than 600x800 at 16 colors; we *used* to have 1024x768, but we encountered problems with norton anti-virus. We removed the anti-virus program, and have since only been able to run 600x800, at 16 colors. No hardware has been added or removed during this period. We are running NT4 Server, with a M741LMRT motherboard, which has a built-in graphics card. The chipset is an SiS 620/5595. I went to the SiS website, and downloaded the graphics drivers for the SiS 620/5595; however, with the SiS620 VGA drivers in place, I could only get a resolution of 640x480. I then tried installing the VGA drivers for the SiS 6326, which allowed a resolution of 600x800, with 16 colors. But neither one offers a greater resolution, or higher colors. We don't have the NT4 discs, because the service guys would bring their own NT4 disk to fix any problems we used to have. How can we get the high resolution & color we had just a few months back? Thank you in advance. Jaspal Marwah

  • Hello Jaspal, You said that you *used* to have 1024x768, but you encountered problems with norton anti-virus. When you removed the NAV, you still have 600x800, at 16 colors resolution. I think what happened is that you may have unintentionally deleted some of the vga driver files. In order to remedy this, you went to the SiS website and downloaded the graphics drivers for the SiS 620/5595. But despite of the SiS620 VGA drivers in being in place, you still could only get the same 640x480 resolution. You know why? There are some instances such as this one that although you got the correct driver, it may not work on a specific model because the manufacturer of the board made some revisions. Bottomline is, no matter what software you uninstall or whatever driver you install, if it's not the correct one for your hardware, the problem will still be there or you may still have other problems. "We don't have the NT4 discs, because the service guys would bring their own NT4 disk to fix any problems we used to have." -- Neither will you find the correct driver there. So in your case, you can get the correct driver, from PC Chips, your mobo's manufacturer. It's found here: PC Chips - PCChips.com VGA driver for WinNT 4.0 http://www.pcchips.com.tw/vgadriver.html#VGA%20WinNT You can simply download the zip file by right-clicking on the link below and choosing "Save Target As...": PC Chips - PCChips.com M741LR(04/12/99) ftp://ftp.pcchips.com.tw/driver/vga/winnt4.0/xcel2000.zip Don't worry, although it says "xcel2000", the contents are actually sis620 drivers. I checked it already. There are two versions inside for NT3.5 and NT4. You need to choose NT4 of course. Unzip the "xcel2000.zip" file to your desired location. HOW TO PROPERLY INSTALL THE DRIVER If the previous driver has an uninstall option, by all means, please use it. Otherwise, you need to update the driver from the device manager and point to thor better yet, remove or delete the device. You will then need to restart. After restarting, you can then install the driver that you downloaded. I hope this helps you. Should you have any comments/questions, please feel free to post your clarification before rating this and I'll attend to you as soon as possible. Thanks for asking. Search strategy: Personal knowledge - I already know that M741LMRT is a PC Chips mobo so I simply located the correct driver. Regards, Feilong

  • Hi Jaspal, First of all, thank you for making your clarification. The installation of the driver I gave you is quite simple and should not have given you any problem. I'm sure that the driver I pointed you to is the right one for your Sis 620. It should have solved your problem. Since the problem is still there, the following is what I think are possible causes: 1) You may have incorrectly installed the driver. As I said, you need to properly remove the 6236 driver you installed because it will conflict with the driver I gave you. Perhaps you can ask someone to assist you on the proper uninstallation of the 6236 driver and installation of the correct driver to make sure that it is done properly. 2) Your monitor's refresh rate is set to a rate that is not supported by your display driver. Try setting the monitor the monitor to "Adapter default" then try to change the screen resolution. 3) Your NT4 system has a problem. Perhaps some system files are missing and/or may have been corrupted since the beginning of this problem. Perhaps it's time to call your NT4 service guys to check and fix your system and install the driver for you. 4) Although it's not likely, I'm not discounting the possibility that this could be a hardware problem, given the age of your mobo. You may be correct on this one. I saw the picture of your mobo in the PC Chips website ( http://www.pcchips.com.tw/M741LMRT.html ) and noticed that it has no AGP port. Since your display driver is built-in you have no alternative option because the mobo has no AGP port and has only one PCI slot which I'm quite sure is occupied by a card. If ever your service guys come in, ask them to verify that your hardware is still okay. If it is, the most likely cause of your problem is number 3 - your NT4 system has a problem. At this point, there's nothing I can do about it and I hope you understand. Since I've already pointed you to the correct driver for your mobo, it should have solved your problem. Since I can't personally check your system, you can only have your service guys check it for you. Again, thanks for asking. Regards, Feilong

  • The original problem still persists. Yet, the researcher offered very precise, thoughful and appropriately tailored responses and suggestions. Though we tried out all suggestions, our problem seems to be one that is not easily solved via written exchanges. Thank you anyhow, the research service remains a valuable one, and we will likely make use of it again in the future.

  • Hello Feilong, Thank you for your response. I installed the drivers you found, but still the problem remains. I also noticed that when I reboot, there are 2 NT boot up options : 1) NT 2) NT (VGA mode) I tried your solution in both modes, but the 800x600 just doesnt' want to budge in the NT mode, and it defaults to 640x480 when I tried it in the NT vga mode (and won't even reach 800x600) Also, I have SiS Sandra 2000 installed (which gives me access to all info on system, CPU, BIOS, etc.), and when I checked the video adapter after your SiS 620 drivers were installed, the video adapter section remained empty - ie.: the drivers were not recognized at all. When I checked the adapter type in the display panel, it was only showing the default driver info ('vga compatible display adapter'). Yet when the other drivers were in use, the specific driver info was noted in the display panel (ie.:SiS 6236). Any further suggestions, or does it sound like a h/w fault? Thank you again for your help.

  • Hi scoofer-ga, Thanks for the tip, but it seems that SP6 is already installed. Is it worth uninstalling SP6, removing the VGA drivers, re-installing correct drivers, then re-installing SP6?

  • This sounds very familiar to me. I recall that uninstalling the video drivers, installing the service pack (even if you have already done so) and reinstalling the video drivers works. Apparently sometimes the system file NT 4 uses to reference the video drivers gets FUBARed during installations of certain software, or even routine operations that may modify system files. Reinstalling the service pack seems to remedy this problem, at least in my case. (It has been a while since i worked with NT4)

  • It could be the monitor driver. Try choosing one of the standard monitor drivers or the ones that includes a resolution in the driver name.
