Platinum: Airport Lounge Access ?

January 6th, 2009
  • I was told that the US Platinum card holders have complementary access to some US airport lounges (Continental, NW ?), and because they are not issued a seperate lounge membership card like they do for the Canadian version (Empress lounge access with Canadian Airlines), all they have to do is show/swipe the card for adminssion. Since there is no "difference" between the Canadian and US issued ones (No giant maple leaf in the middle of the card), Canadian card holders also get this benefit. Can anyone confirm/deny this ?

Also would be interested in the rules regarding lounge access. Empress Lounge access is restricted to CP/AA ticket holders only, are the CO/NW ones the same ?

  • You can also access the TWA Ambassadors Club with Amex Plat, and in each case you need to have a ticket usually for within 24/hrs of travel (before/after). This is the only difference I am aware of compared to having the individual CO, NW or TWA Lounge Cards themselves!

  • "locum tenens" is Latin for "holding the place (of)" and in legalese means a substitute, a lieutenant, deputy, etc. Rarely used.

  • I was bumped from DL to TWA first class a month or two ago. There was a 6 hour layover at my favorite ( http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif ) airport in STL. Figuring FC would get me into the club I put on my "pitiful" look. That wasn't good enough and as I was turning to leave she asked me if I had AX Platinum. I waved it at her. No imprint was taken and I was admitted to the club.

  • Thanks for clarifying, as I was about to do - find more use for my long ago four years of Latin in High School!

Beckles- How often does that imprint thing happen to you? I've never had that happen anywhere in the world. Wonder if the front desk person was just trying to cover their butt somehow or what!

  • Where are the non-airline American Express clubs located? I did pay my $300 (which was billed before I received any literature about benefits), but I never received my "appointment book". Are these the "American Express Centurion Lounges", and if so, where are they?

  • SD ~ You won't received your appointment book until around the new year (they send you one every year, but if you join in mid-year, I don't think they send you one for that year).

According to the book, the non-airline affiliated lounges are:

    Consul Club Lounge, Frankfurt, Germany
    Grand Daube Lounge, Vienna, Austria
    Salon Centurion, Buenos Aires, Argentina
    Centurion Elite, Mexico City, Mexico
First Class Lounge, Abu Dhabi, UAE
    First Class Lounge, Dubai, UAE
    Delmon Lounge, Bahrain
    Oasis Lounge, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
    Cedars Lounge, Beirut, Lebanon

  • According to my handy-dandy Date Book that AMEX sends me every year that includes all my Platinum Card privileges, there are only nine other lounges besides the NW/CO/TW locations that you can use your US Platinum Card to get into. There may be more out there, but AMEX isn't telling me about them!

  • erdoc ~ BTW, that sounds like a *really* cool job ... You're a doctor and you get to travel a lot!

  • Beckles: It's generally nice but downsides include being away from home and relationships a lot, and always being the new
kid on the block. Still it's a gratifying life.

  • hsi.chang:

I think everyone is missing your point -- are Canadian Platinum Amex cards afforded the same benefits as US Amex Platinum cards, with regard to lounge access.

From my experience, the answer is yes. In the last year or so, I have used my Amex card several times for entrance to the NW lounges in MSP and DTW, and the CO lounges at IAH. In each case, I showed them my Amex card, they asked to look at my ticket, and then invited me in. No one imprinted or otherwise took my number, in any of the lounges.

I have also used it once overseas, although I don't recall where I was. I think I was in Istanbul, and got access to the airport authority owned lounge. (One of those deals where all the airlines share/rent the same lounge. Pretty decent lounge, actually.)

Upon further posts from beckles, below, I recall that the lounge was in fact at BAH, in Manama, Bahrain. I knew it had to be somewhere.

Quite some time ago, I saw a list of Internationl Airport where Amex would get you in. There was no rhyme or reason to it -- they were just kind of scattered all over. In Hamburg, where all (most?) lounges are on the same level, I did walk by a sign saying "Amex Platinum members welcome here," or words to that effect. I think there was more than a "handful" -- perhaps a 50 or 100. I also recall seeing a note that the list was subject to change

    Regards,

    Ken Hamer

  • Speculating but - presumably the imprint is sent to Amex and you can be billed the 'day-membership' rate if you have used an ineligible card?

  • US Platinum card members get access to NW, CO, and TWA lounges in the US and a handful of lounges in various foreign cities.

When I used this privilege in IAH a few months ago they took an imprint of my card and had me sign it (no actual charge of course, just a receipt that i had been there).

I think you're on to something there though, they don't scan the card and check it, so if it looks the same as an US Platinum Card, I don't think they'd know the difference ...

  • Out of curiosity, what exactly is a "locum tenens" physician?

This is what the dictionary says but I still am not sure:

locum tenens n : someone (physician or clergyman) who substitutes temporarily for another member of the same profession [syn: locum]

  • KenHamer: Yes, thank you, that was the answer that I was looking for. If you can locate the URL for this list, please do post it.

  • Exclusively For Corporate Platinum Card Members
    Airport Club Access
http://travel.americanexpress.com/travel/cpt/cpthome.htm?10000 Then, click on "Airport Club Access" link.
"Airline tickets must be for travel within 24 hours of your club visit. If accompanied by a Platinum Card member, the following individuals are also eligible to use this service: the Card member’s spouse and his/her children, or up to two traveling companions." http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

The American Express Platinum Card is valid only at the specific (first generation) clubs that they have agreements with, rather than their extended families. For example, CO and HP honor each others club cards (CO is valid at HP and visa versa) however, the American Express Platinum is valid at CO, but NOT at HP (even though a CO Card IS valid at HP). Of course, not all front desk agents are aware of or enforce all the rules, but it has been my experience, that most do.

I have always had my card scanned or have been added to a tally sheet whenever I use anything other than my actual club card for the specific club I enter. More than a simple count, I overheard that the clubs get a per person or per usage reimbursement whenever anyone uses an American Express Platinum for admittance.

  • I just got my Canadian Amex Platinum, so I too haven't recieved any materals regarding lounge use (or anthing other then the card and my first bill with the annual fee!)...But I was looking online and at: http://www.americanexpress.com.bh/cards/platinum/airports.html

There is a list of lounges available to platinum cardmembers (though this may only be for middle eastern issued cards) I would assume that any AMEX Platium should work.

Sadly it looks like most of these lounges are in places that I rarely frequent -- nothing in Asia!
    Later,
    -Ty

  • Between my Canadian Amex Platinum and my wife's Canadian Diners Club, we have never been refused entry to any airport lounge/club. Never had my card swiped or imprinted, but have had to show my ticket on occasion. Amex lets 2 guests accompany you, Diners only one.

  • Kyklin:
It is exactly as the dictionary describes. If there is a shortage of physicians for whatever reason (new group, sick or vacationing doctors, etc) the emergency department still needs to be staffed 24/7. That's where I come in. I am willing to work in places I certainly would not want to live for short terms. A contract group risks losing their contract for non-performance if the ED is unstaffed. It is worth it to them to fly me in and put me up. I get to work at places that need the help I have to offer rather than scratch eyes out trying to compete in an HMO saturated market, yet I can live anywhere I want. A small group of companies makes matches between those of us who do this for a living and the places that need the coverage.

  • doc ~ I've only used my privileges twice, both times President's Club in IAH. First time, I just "slipped" in without even showing the card, second time they imprinted the card. Seeing that there was one of those big electric AMEX imprint machines for this on the reception desk, I think this must be common practice (or else why the big ugly machine on the desk?)

  • Nope, there are many other differences. Let's say you have a Continental President's club membership. Not only do you have acces to CO and NW clubs (like the American Express Platinum card), but you also get the following:
Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges - 15 locations worldwide+
Air France Lounges - Geneva, Houston, Paris and Munich**
Alitalia Lounges - all lounges in Italy and Rio de Janeiro**
America West Clubs - Phoenix and Las Vegas
    ANA Lounge - Tokyo
British Airways Executive Lounge - Brussels
    Cathay Pacific Lounge - Frankfurt**
China Airlines Dynasty Lounge - Taipei**
Continental VIP Lounge (Self-Serve) - Toronto
CSA Czech Airlines Business Club - Prague**
    EVA Airways Club - Taipei
    Friendship Center - Baltimore
    Hugo Junkers Lounge - Düsseldorf**
Servisair Lounge - Birmingham, London and Manchester**
    TAP Lounge - Lisbon**
    VIP Lounge - Madrid**
Virgin Upper Class Lounge - Newark++

+ Must present membership card and Continental or Air Canada ticket for entry.
** Must present membership card and Continental ticket for entry.
++Must present membership card and Continental ticket (Newark to London-Gatwick) for entry.

Also, with President's club you can bring two friends or business associates, or your entire family. I believe that you can't do that with the AmEx Platinum card.

(I am sure that the NorthWest clubs have advantages as well...)
